Federal authorities are seizing an unfinished apartment complex at the Four Corners area and other property in Brownsville and Cameron County they suspect have been purchased with embezzled money.
Authorities allege the property was purchased by Hector Javier Villarreal, a former Mexican government official from Coahuila Mexico, who served as the former finance minister there.
Villarreal is accused of money laundering. He is also accused of forging state documents in Mexico granting him approval to obtain debt and to borrow $222 million, federal court documents reflect.
He is wanted in Bexar County on charges of money laundering and engaging in organized criminal activity, said Tom Kelly, spokesman for the Texas Attorney General’s Office in Austin. Because it is an ongoing investigation, the AG’s office will make no further comments, Kelly said on Monday.
