The National Crime Agency (NCA) of the UK has ordered Thomas White, an unemployed university drop-out, to repay over £493k ($661k) in bitcoin. In 2019, White had pleaded guilty to drug trafficking through a dark web business, ML and making indecent images of children. The authorities had then sentenced him to five years and four months in jail.
White began re-operating the dark web site Silk Road a month after its closure by the FBI in 2013. The website allowed anonymous purchase and sale of drugs, computer hacking tools and other illegal products using bitcoin.
After the announcement of White’s prison sentence, the NCA continued its investigation of his finances. As such, White is now required to repay over $661k in bitcoin. The authorities have further seized all electronic items that White had used to commit his crimes.
