Any poker machine win over $1000 would have to be reported to federal authorities under a plan by anti-pokies senator Nick Xenophon to crack down on money laundering.
The independent South Australian senator will this afternoon move a bill in the Senate that would force venues to also pay out any winnings over $1000 as a cheque. This is already the case in Victoria, with other states having slightly higher thresholds.
Senator Xenophon said the bill followed recent media reports that alleged a Victorian hotel failed to act on suspicions of money laundering after a pensioner and his family were found to have cashed in more than $630,000 in supposed winnings at the hotel between March and August this year.
