The prosecution in Brussels has opened investigations into allegations of money laudering by a Burundian, Mohamed Rukara, according to a statement issued on Friday in the Belgian capital.
According to the prosecution, Mr Rukara recently lodged a huge sum of money in a Belgian bank and the Belgian courts wish to establish its source.
The statement says that the Prosecution was informed by the Department for the handling of financial information, a Belgian government organ.
The case comes only weeks before the visit to Bujumbura of a high powered official Belgian delegation, to be led by prince Philippe, to represent the country at ceremonies commemorating the 50 anniversary of Burundi’s independence on 2 July.
