Maritza Falu, and a company she ran that is tied to an alleged money laundering scheme, received close to $170,000 from Newark Mayor Cory Booker’s 2010 re-election campaign, according to campaign finance disclosures filed with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission.
Falu, 54, was arrested at her North Ward home this morning by investigators from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey Department of Treasury. Her husband, Luis Velez was also arrested.
Investigators with the prosecutor’s office said she is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged illegal kickbacks in Newark City Hall. While the mayor’s office is among those being investigated, Booker is not a target, investigators with the prosecutor’s office said.
